My Working Holiday

Working holiday info and tips from a working holidaymaker

About this site & Me

Welcome, to all of you on, or considering, a working holiday.  At this point in time, Australian and New Zealand citizens have  the most options when it comes to working while travelling in other countries, while people from Canada, USA and Ireland and other countries also have (albeit less) options.  This site is specifically related to ‘working holidays’, not work visas that require you to be sponsored or have specific career skills or experience.

People between the ages of 18 and 30 can take advantage of these visas in order to earn money whilst travelling, or gain career experience in completely new environments.  Working holidays for young Australians and New Zealanders have become something of a rite of passage with the increasing ease of world-wide independent travel, but this site aims to expose people from other countries to the possibilities of working holidays.

My name is Laura, I’m from Brisbane, Australia, and began my first working holiday in December 2007.  Before that, I had holidayed in Europe and SE Asia.  Late 2007 I flew to the UK (via India) where I first worked in a Lake District hotel, then spent 3 months in Africa, then returned to the UK to become a live-in carer.  During my time off from that job, I travelled in Morocco, China and Iceland.

After my 12 month work limit finished, I stayed on in London for another few months, travelling around England and Croatia.  I obtained a second working holiday visa in July 2009 for Ireland, and worked in hostels in Kerry and Wicklow during that time.

In February 2010, I am flying home to Australia via Thailand.
