Tax Info

One of the first things on your list when you move to a new country is to get a tax identification number.  This can get a little confusing since each country has its own name for the number – Tax File Number (TFN) in Australia, National Insurance (NI) number in the UK, and Personal Public Service (PPS) number in Ireland, etc.

Your employer will submit your ID number to their payroll officers so that the tax you owe can be taken out of your wages before you are paid.  Then, at the end of the financial year, you can claim back the tax you have paid if it was too much.

If you don’t provide a tax ID number to your employer, you may have even more tax (emergency tax) withheld from your wages, which would also have to be claimed back at the end of the financial year (the date of which varies for different countries).
