How to Buy Train Tickets in the UK

The most convenient (and also cheapest) way to buy train tickets in advance is to buy them online.  In the UK, I’ve found the best method is to use The Train Line website to find the ticket you want, then book the tickets directly through the rail operator to avoid The Train Line’s booking fee.

In the UK, different rail operators run trains in different parts of the country, with some rail operators overlapping on certain rail lines.  The Train Line allows you to compare all rail operators and find the cheapest ticket for your journey, but then they stick you with fees for the card you pay with and how you choose to pick up your tickets.

So, once you’ve decided which ticket you want, head directly to the train operator’s website, for example First Great Western or Virgin Trains, and buy them there.
